Goals and Objectives of the Institute
The University of Missouri-Columbia, recognizing its unique national capabilities as a provider of nuclear science education and research, formed the campus-wide Nuclear Science and Engineering Institute in 2002. The Institute was created to facilitate multidisciplinary activities of students and faculty at MU, as well as to promote interaction with peers in other academic, governmental and industrial organizations. The NSEI integrates faculty from many disciplines across campus and the specialized facilities to support graduate education and research - including those investigations utilizing the world class facilities available at the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR).
A major goal of the NSEI is to contribute well-trained, qualifi ed graduates to the well-documented national need for persons with expertise in nuclear sciences. Career paths for graduates include nuclear engineering, health physics, radiation chemistry, nuclear medicine, radiopharmacy and physics, as well as electrical, chemical and mechanical engineering with nuclear training. Our NSEI organizational objectives are also enhancing educational outreach to K-12 education and the public. In addition to the existing summer program for secondary science teachers to learn about nuclear science and engineering, faculty are building new experiences to deliver information to other groups, including innovative electronic delivery and support.
